About Friends of Calcutta

Friends of Calcutta is a totally voluntary organisation which since 1994 has had the honour to be very closely associated with the ongoing humanitarian work which makes Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) so special. From very humble beginnings through the gathering together of returned volunteers in Fermoy, Co. Cork in 1994, to raise funds for Sr.Cyrils’ much needed night shelter for vulnerable girls; our organization has grown to today funding many projects which serve the most marginalised, both in the Kolkata and throughout the state of West Bengal.

In 1995, primarily through the proceeds of the Bagenalstown Bazaar, which would become an annual event for over a decade, we distributed funds to projects in Calcutta which assisted excellent humanitarian work. This humble beginning links which have served us well throughout the years that have followed. We are especially privileged to enjoy a very close relationship with Sr. Cyril Mooney, the Loreto Sisters, Dr. Jack Preger, Calcutta Rescue, the Christian Brothers, FOKE, The Bridge Foundation and DAS to name but a few.

In Ireland we enjoy the privilege of having one of the hardest working vibrant committees any charity could wish to have. All committee members are totally voluntary and all travel (and other expenses) of committee members visiting our projects are met from their own personal resources. We, as a committee, are extremely proud of this fact as we can therefore guarantee that at all times 100% of donations given to Friends of Calcutta is used for the purpose for which it has been given. Any small administration costs (such as web-site connection charges, stamps etc) are met from a small separate fund.

Our committee meets each month and for over a decade we have been holding our meetings in “Avila”, the Carmelite Monastery in Donnybrook, Dublin. We are extremely grateful for the on-going welcome and support the Carmelite Community affords us. Avila also hosts our AGM and one of the highlights of our year, the Christmas Mass when ex-committee members, family, friends, supporters and returned volunteers join us in celebrating the year that has just passed.
