Once again this year we gathered all the vocational trainees from our three city centres for a celebratory meal in Hot Wok restaurant in the China Town area of Calcutta. This year event had even more significance for a number of reasons. Firstly due to the sudden passing of DAS secreatary and founder Sheela Sengupta we decided to hold a competition to judge the best handicrafts made in each centre and we were delighted to have Sheela’s daughter Ishani in attendance to help with the judging of the pieces made. Also our committee member and long term supporter of Vocational Training Edel McCormack was making her first trip to Calcutta in four years and it was great for us to have her in attendance for this special occasion.
The trainees from Tangra, Topsia and Khiddrpore all gathered for a memorable evening in which they got to showcase the items they had made in the previous weeks for the night. Each trainee also made her own outfit for the night and it was a great sight to see all them turn up in something they had made themselves. The night was a huge success with members of the Friends of Calcutta committee in attendance along with staff from DAS and Sheela’s daughter Ishani. Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the night and it served as a great way to boost the confidence of our trainees and help them realise their potential in creating an income for themselves in to the future.
